Mets add shortstop alternative after Bo Bichette had to return to position for first time since Blue Jays

The New York Mets had to use Bo Bichette at shortstop on Saturday.

It wasn't in the plans when they got him from the Toronto Blue Jays, but injuries forced their hand, at least temporarily.

On Sunday, they brought up a new shortstop to at least help in lieu of all the absences.

Francisco Lindor has already been missing. The latest injury is to Ronny Mauricio.

They've called up Vidal Brujan from Triple-A Syracuse.

Vidal Brujan will join the Mets from Syracuse, per source, to give the team another shortstop option with Ronny Mauricio headed to the IL. Bo Bichette finished at SS last night.

Brujan is a career .199 hitter at the MLB level across parts of five seasons with the Rays, Marlins, Cubs, Braves and Orioles.

He doesn't have much power or speed, so he's really just an old-school utility man with a solid glove and versatility.

This season down with Syracuse, Brujan has batted .241 with three doubles, one home run, five steals and a .618 OPS.

It won't be ideal if the Mets have to give starts to Brujan, but they're quite shorthanded at the moment.

Andy Ibanez is a utility player already on the MLB roster, but of all the spots he can play, shortstop isn't really on the list.

That might mean more Bichette at short, or starts for Brujan, because that's about all the Mets have left to choose from.
