Mets actively searching center field market, scouting two former All-Stars

The New York Mets continue their pursuit of a center field upgrade with just four days left before the trade deadline.

New York has had steady interest in Baltimore Orioles centerfielder Cedric Mullins and Chicago White Sox centerfielder Luis Robert Jr.

Both haven’t had great seasons, but a change of scenery could benefit both players.

Robert has been in trade rumors for a while now, but the White Sox decided to hold on to him with hopes that he would rebuild his trade value this season.

While Robert had a horrendous start to this season, the former All-Star has slashed .351/.442/.541 in July.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported that the White Sox have been waiting for more prospect capital to finalize a deal.

“The New York Mets are keeping an eye on centerfielders Cedric Mullins of the Baltimore Orioles and Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox. Robert returned to the lineup on Sunday as the designated hitter after missing the previous two games due to groin tightness,” wrote Rogers. “Before getting hurt, he was easily having the best month of any over the past two seasons, hitting .351 with a .442 OBP in July. The White Sox have been waiting for an increase in prospect capital to move forward on a deal.

“It's possible they finally get it this week, but they could always pick up the option in his contract this offseason, and do this all over again next year. Robert's production this month has teams intrigued.”

The Mets have a half-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the National League East.

Adding a solid centerfielder would boost New York’s odds at a deep postseason run, and Robert seems like the best option going forward.
