Met Gala 2025: Dress Code and Star-Studded Host Committee Revealed
Not everyone made it up the Met Gala steps.
While the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit went off without a hitch on May 5, many stars, including a handful known for their bold Met Gala looks, were missing from the action.
While many fans were hoping to see Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce make their red carpet debut at the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" themed evening, E! News learned hours before the event kicked off that the couple would not be in attendance.
Similarly, LeBron James—who was set to be an honorary co-chair alongside Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton and A$AP Rocky–announced the day of the event that he would not be able to be present.
As he wrote on X May 5, "Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight."
And if you couldn't help but wonder why Sarah Jessica Parker was missing from the action, she also previously confirmed she'd be sitting this year out. As she told Entertainment Tonight May 2, "I have to work."
Naomi Campbell also confirmed on Instagram that she would not be able to make it.
"I was so honored to be invited to tonight’s big event, but regretfully cannot make it," Naomi wrote in a May 5 Instagram post. "Even though I’m not there in person, I’m with you all in spirit, carried by the legacy of my beloved friend, the late Andre Leon Talley. His commanding presence, vision and belief that fashion is art helped shape what the Met Gala is presenting tonight."
Another couple that missed their opportunity to make a red carpet debut? Olivia Rodrigo and boyfriend Louis Partridge. While the Enola Holmes made his Met debut at the event, Olivia—who has previously attended the fundraiser in 2021, 2022 and 2023—opted to let him have his solo moment.
Ariana Grande was also nowhere to be seen, but the "positions" singer has only attended the event twice before, so it makes sense if her schedule was full.
Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were also once regulars at the ball, but have not attended since 2022, when Blake wore a Statue of Liberty-inspired gown for the “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” theme.
And while the couple—who share kids James, 10, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin, 2—also did not attend this year, Blake previously expressed love for the annual occasion.
“When the carpet matches the Blakes,” the 37-year-old wrote in a May 2020 post, reflecting on how her past Met Gala looks were perfectly on theme. “Met Ball 2018, 2017, 2016.”

As for other stars you’d hoped to see all dressed in their first Monday of May best? There are quite a few people in Hollywood who have regularly chosen to sit out of the festivity altogether. Jennifer Garner, for example, told Vogue last year that the event was a little too “scary” for her amid her first and only time ever attending in 2007.
Meanwhile, big celebrities like Meryl Streep and Ryan Gosling have never attended the ball. Gosling and his longtime partner Eva Mendes, for their part, prefer to keep a low profile, but Streep nearly made her debut in 2020, as she was announced as a co-chair. However, the COVID-19 pandemic kept a party for the Costume Institute’s “About Time” theme that year to move forward.
