(Bloomberg) — Germany’s Christian Democratic Union named its seven cabinet ministers to serve under conservative Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz, filling in key personnel before the 69-year-old conservative is due to take power next week with the Social Democrats as junior partner.

Merz has nominated ministers including Katherina Reiche — a utility executive — for the economy and energy portfolio and Johann Wadephul for foreign affairs, the CDU said Monday in an emailed statement.

Thorsten Frei will be Merz’s chief of staff as chancellery minister, Patrick Schnieder takes over transport and Karsten Wildberger will be minister of a new department for digitalization and modernization of the state.

The CDU is due to rubber stamp the coalition agreement sealed last month with the SPD at a special congress later Monday in Berlin.

The CDU’s Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, has already approved the accord, while a positive outcome is expected on Wednesday when the SPD announces the result of an online ballot of its roughly 360,000 members.

After that, the party of outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz will announce its cabinet ministers, likely including co-leader Lars Klingbeil in the key finance role and Boris Pistorius retaining his job as defense minister.

Merz is due to get backing from lawmakers in the lower house of parliament on May 6, after which he’ll be sworn in along with his cabinet.

Reiche, 51, is a former deputy minister for both environment and transport who has been chief executive officer of EON SE’s Westenergie AG unit since 2020.

She was a member of the Bundestag for the CDU from 1998 to 2015, during which time she was also a deputy leader of the combined CDU/CSU parliamentary caucus.

Wadephul is a committed European with strong links to Germany’s international partners in the EU and NATO and a firm backer of support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion. The 62-year-old is also close to the armed forces, having served as a volunteer soldier in the 1980s.

Markus Soeder, the CSU leader and Bavarian premier, is expected to name the party’s three ministers later on Monday at a news conference in Munich.
