The first Mercury retrograde of 2026 is here, and it shan’t be gentle.

Mercury retrograde begins on February 26, stations direct on March 20, and will clear its post-retrograde shadow on April 9th.

What is Mercury in retrograde?

Because Mercury governs communication and commerce, its retrograde cycle has a direct bearing on both our personal and professional lives.

Contrary to the terminology, Mercury and other planets do not ever move backward in space; they merely slow down, a deceleration that looks like a reversal from our vantage on Earth.

When a planet is retrograde, its energy works in the opposite direction, not necessarily against us, but certainly not as a trusted sidekick. As Mercury rules the mind, its retrograde signifies a period of challenge in organizing, expressing, and creating order in our lives

“November feels like the year’s emotional hangover: gray skies and low moods. But instead of allowing the chaos of Mercury retrograde to derail your productivity, make it an opportunity. This is a good time to switch up your routine, be more creative, and clear out all your mental and digital clutter,” Avery Morgan, productivity expert at EduBirdie, told The Post.

To stop fighting and start innovating, Morgan offers the following tips:

“While typical habits and routines are confining during Mercury retrograde, consider having a little fun with unpredictability. The energy of retrograde can invite you to step outside of a structured routine,” said Morgan.

She recommends leaning into deviation by working at a different time of day, changing your workspace, or reordering your to-do list.

“Retrograde energy is stimulated by disrupting patterns. So use this as a reason to introduce some mayhem into your usual activities and see what is revealed.”

Outsource your memory

Mercury retrograde lives to make a mess. To keep your life rock steady or at least less rocky, Morgan recommends relying on apps like Google Calendar (notifications enabled!) and automating or delegating non-essential tasks.

“Use any help that makes it easier for you to focus on the bigger picture and more important work. Minimizing distractions and keeping your memory ‘outsourced’ is the best way to deal with chaos.”

While Mercury retrograde disrupts the natural order of life, that tempo shift can spur creativity.

“Think of it as an engine to fuel something new. Brainstorm new ideas or start a passion project. The disorder that typically comes with retrograde energy can actually break free-thinking processes and provoke creative solutions you wouldn’t otherwise consider.”

Reorganize your ‘inbox’ (digital and digital)

“Communication issues are prevalent during Mercury retrograde, so it’s an excellent idea to use this time to remove clutter from both your mind and digital environment,” said Morgan.

She recommends taking the time to do the kind of humdrum housekeeping that feels tedious but necessary: organize your to-do lists, delete old files, and unsubscribe from unnecessary emails.

“A clean environment tends to relieve stress that comes from the nature of retrograde. Declutter your mind and tasks for focus and clarity; it will help you to deal with inconveniences with less anxiety during this chaotic period.”
