Megyn Kelly has speculated about Nick Reiner's potential defense, as he faces charges on two counts of first-degree murder. He is a suspect in the murder of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

On Sunday, December 14, Rob and Michele were found dead in their apartment in Los Angeles with knife stabbing wounds. Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested later that day and now faces two counts of first-degree murder. He also appeared in court on Wednesday, December 17.

Notably, Nick's defense lawyer in this case is Alan Jackson, who is known for the Menendez case. Lyle and Erik Menendez fatally shot their parents in 1989. They claimed that they did it in self-defense after years of alleged sexual abuse.

Megyn Kelly said that Nick Reiner could put up a similar argument. She quoted a Daily Mail report in which an actor from Being Charlie alleged that Rob and Nick used to "kiss each other on the lips" during filming.

During her YouTube Live on December 17, Kelly said:

“My question is, is there a likelihood Nick Reiner pulls a card from the Menendez defense? We’re in California, it’s going to be a California jury, and [he] says ‘he was molesting me my whole life. That’s why I was so messed up from the time I was 10, that’s why I got hooked on drugs.’ There’s no way of disproving that, and plays the sympathy card with a California jury about why, from a very young age, he was all messed up." “In no way am I impuning Rob Reiner, nor do I believe there’s anything untoward. I think he seems, by all accounts, a loving father and an appropriate father,” she clarified.

Nick is next set to appear in court on January 7, 2026. If he is convicted, he could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.

Nick Reiner went through drug addiction and made multiple visits to rehab. He then helped make the movie Being Charlie, which was inspired by his struggles, along with Rob Reiner.

Erik Aude was an actor in the movie, but his scenes were later cut. In an interview with the Daily Mail, published on December 15, he spoke about the relationship between the son and the father, saying:

"They were fighting and arguing with each other while they were on set. They were kissing each other on the lips, which was weird. They were bickering and going off on each other on set. It wasn't comfortable. There was definitely hostility there." "The way couples would fight in front of people, they just don't care anymore about showing their dirty laundry, if that makes sense. That's the way the dad and the son worked," he added.

Nathan Stevens, who starred in Being Charlie, claimed that while Rob and Nick had their issues, the latter "was always kind" on the set. His brother David added that Nick appeared to be "proud" about working with his father.
