The Los Angeles Dodgers traded away former third-round pick Dustin May during the 2025 season after he was coming off a year in which he didn’t pitch. Following an up-and-down first half of the season, the Dodgers ultimately decided it was in their best interest to move him in exchange for prospects.

“The Red Sox pushed the market to acquire a starting pitcher before the Trade Deadline, and it went down to the wire. Ultimately, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow finalized a deal just in time to acquire righty Dustin May from the Dodgers in exchange for outfield prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard,” MLB.com’s Ian Browne wrote.

Despite being traded, May was still part of the Dodgers’ 2025 roster and contributed earlier in the season, meaning he will receive a World Series ring. It marks his third World Series championship during his tenure with the organization.

“They were all my boys. It was definitely very fun to watch... I played with them for four and a half months or however long it was. So I definitely helped and contributed for them to get there,” May said.

On Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals made May’s deal official by finalizing his contract. He is now focused on getting back on track after a sluggish 2025 campaign.

“Dustin May's deal with the St. Louis Cardinals is official, sources tell ESPN. He will make $12.5 million this year, and the mutual option for the 2027 season is for $20 million,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported.

May now has a year or two to prove that he can still provide significant value to a major league roster. However, another injury could be the final straw for contenders considering taking a chance on him.

The Cardinals are in an unusual position, as they appear to be entering a rebuild. Nolan Arenado, Brendan Donovan, and Willson Contreras have all been rumored to be on the trade block, suggesting it may only be a matter of time before major moves are made. For May, the focus is simple: make the most of this opportunity.
