The internet is in an uproar after Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird announced they are splitting after 10 years together.
Fans were in disbelief when the former WNBA star and pro soccer player decided to call it quits after six years engaged. The former couple, who co-host the A Touch More podcast, shared on Friday, April 17, that they have "made the decision to separate as a couple."
"This hasn't been an easy decision, but it's one we've made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other. We've shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something that we'll always carry with us," the couple wrote in an Instagram post. "We are so grateful to this incredible community that has held us up, welcomed us in, and supported us exactly as we are. So many of you have reminded us, again and again, why loving out loud matters."
Fans responded in the comments in disbelief at the news. Many were asking other fans to respect the couple during this difficult time, with others displaying complete shock.
"Can you imagine having to send a press release when you’re going through a heavy break-up?" one fan asked in the comment section. "How painful on top of painful!!! Sending love to both of these humans as they walk this road."
One fan made sure to let the former professional athletes know that they are "two icons always" despite the split.
Another fan did not take too kindly to others making light of the situation.
"hey just a reminder for the folks making jokes or making this about themselves in the comments - these are real people, not just the object of your parasocial obsession," the fan wrote. "Can’t imagine having to craft a pr release about a breakup - what a burden that must be, but yall’ve done it with extreme grace and respect to the communities you’ve built in online spaces. Wishing all the best for both Megan and Sue, hoping you find space for healing and love again."
What are Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe doing after the split?
The couple met at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and the following year, they were confirmed to be dating. In 2020, Rapinoe proposed to Bird in a pool.
In a video for their podcast community, they shed light on what they will be doing next. In the Instagram post, they shared that they will no longer be hosting the podcast together and will go on in their individual endeavors. However, they are going to do a "trade-off hosting six more special episodes, which will act as a "farewell" to their space.
Bird's podcast, Bird's Eye View, will be coming back for its second season. Rapinoe shared that she will be doing a special series for the World Cup and will launch her own show in the summer.
