Steven Spielberg Reveals If His Wife Kate Capshaw and Kids Believe in Aliens
Full disclosure: Steven Spielberg has a big family.
In fact, the director of Disclosure Day—which debuts June 12—and his wife Kate Capshaw are parents to an expansive, blended family with seven children: Jessica Capshaw, 49; Max Spielberg, 40; Theo Spielberg, 37; Sasha Spielberg, 36; Sawyer Spielberg, 34; Mikaela Spielberg, 30, and Destry Allyn Spielberg, 29.
Considering many of the kids have followed in their dad’s famous footsteps by pursuing careers in Hollywood, Steven has been able to offer them some advice.
"I basically say, 'When you’re going up to read for a part'—my kids who are actors—'don’t expect to get the part,'" the Oscar winner told E! News at the Disclosure Day premiere in New York June 8. "'Go in there and just cut loose and let it all happen. Because if you expect or you’re really hoping to get it, it’s going to make you so self-conscious and you’re going to be so nervous.'"
Given his workload, having a cast of kids wasn't always part of Steven's plot. It wasn’t until he directed his 1982 movie E.T.—which Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas starred in as kids—that the filmmaker realized he could take on the role of dad.
"I was a parent on that film," Steven shared at the 2022 TCM Classic Film Festival. "I was literally feeling like I was very protective of Henry and my whole cast, and especially Drew, who was only 6 years old. And I started thinking, 'Well, maybe this could be my real life someday.'"
As he later added, "I really felt that that would be my next big production."

And with seven kids, you could say Steven achieved exactly that.
"I love my kids as individuals, not as a herd," the 79-year-old noted to Vanity Fair in 2008, "and I do have a herd of children: I have seven kids."

Amy Irving
While Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving were married for only four years, they knew each other for much longer.
"We were together for 14 years," the actress revealed on The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast in 2025, “with three years off for good behavior.”
While Amy has acted in several films—including Carrie, Yentl and Crossing Delancey—she never appeared in Steven’s movies. However, she said she was up to play Marion (Karen Allen) in his 1981 Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark but lost the role during an off-period of their on-again, off-again relationship: "You walk out, you don’t get the part."
Still, they wed in 1985. And while they divorced in 1989—Amy going on to marry Bruno Barreto and then Kenneth Bowser and Steven wedding Kate Capshaw—she noted they remain "very much family."

Max Spielberg
Speaking of family, Amy and Steven welcomed son Max Spielberg in 1985 and continued to co-parent after their split. Like his dad, Max is often in the studio—albeit a different kind as he makes video games. And the FuzzyBot creative director noted Steven "loves gaming."
"He’s a big PC gamer," Max continued on MinnMax in 2024, sharing he'll often recommend games to his dad. "So, that’s our bonding point as well."
Not wanting to play when it comes to love, Max wed Valerie Spielberg in December 2014.

Kate Capshaw
Steven met Kate—a teacher turned actress—when she auditioned for his 1984 movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, landing the role of Willie Scott. Both in relationships at the time, they didn’t date until years later, with Kate previously telling The Spokesman-Review they moved in together in 1989 following Steven's split from Amy.
The couple wed two years later. And while Kate appeared in other films—including Black Rain, Just Cause and The Love Letter—she stepped away from acting in the early aughts to focus on their family.
"Kate has made such a life for me," Steven said at SXSW 2026. "We brought seven kids into the world—two of them adopted. We now have six grandchildren. And that is the real stuff."

Jessica Capshaw
When Steven tied the knot with Kate, he became stepdad to her daughter Jessica Capshaw—born in 1976—from her first marriage to Robert Capshaw.
In addition to appearing in stepdad Steven's 2002 film Minority Report, the actress has starred in TV shows such as 9-1-1: Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy and The Practice as well as in movies, including Holidate, Dear Zoe and Valentine.
As for her co-star in life, Jessica wed Christopher Gavigan in 2004. Together, they welcomed kids Luke, Eve, Poppy and Josephine.

Theo Spielberg
According to The New York Times, Kate adopted Theo Spielberg before she married Steven. And after the couple wed, the famed director adopted him too.
Theo, born in 1988, served as a production assistant on Steven's 2008 movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and was a researcher for the 2011 documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
However, the Yale graduate later pivoted to music and formed the band Wardell with his sister Sasha. And Theo still remembers the musical carpool game Steven would play with them when they were kids.
"When my dad would drive us, we'd play 'Name That Score,'" he recalled to Vanity Fair in 2016. "He’d put on a movie score and we’d have to guess it within five seconds."

Sasha Spielberg
Along with being a musician, Sasha Spielberg—who also performs under the name Buzzy Lee—is an actress. The Brown University alum—who Steven and Kate welcomed in 1990—has appeared in movies such as Licorice Pizza, Dude and The Art of Getting By as well as some of her father’s films, including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal and The Terminal.
"I’d take a day off from high school or middle school to shoot, and I felt so cool," she recalled to Rolling Stone in 2018. "It was just a cute, endearing bonding experience."
Sasha also bonded with Harry McNally, and they married in 2022.

Sawyer Spielberg
Born in 1992, Sawyer Spielberg also developed a passion for the screen. Like Theo, he was a production assistant on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. However, he followed in mother Kate's footsteps by pursuing acting and was casted in Masters of the Air, Materialists, Merry Good Enough and Once Upon a Time in Hell’s Kitchen.
Acting also led Sawyer to meet his wife Raye Levine.
"We were both taking a class together and it was an immediate connection," he told Tatler in 2021. "We’ve been tied at the hip ever since."
As Sawyer revealed to 27East.com in 2023, he and Raye later grew their family by welcoming daughter Fynn and son Callum.

Mikaela Spielberg
Born in 1996, Mikaela Spielberg was adopted by Steven and Kate. Over the years, she's made headlines over her run-in with the law—she was arrested in 2020 on a count of domestic violence/assault with bodily injury and released hours later, per court records—and her career.
Creating digital prints and sketches, Mikaela told Whitehot Magazine in 2020 she refers to herself as a "multi-medium" artist. She's also worked with adult content platforms.
"I’m really enjoying work, and it’s giving me a whole new life-affirming way to be,” she told Daily Beast in 2020. "It opened up a gateway into being able to dance. The best part of it has been that anytime I want to I can just go into work, and go dance."

Destry Allyn Spielberg
Just like her parents Kate and Steven, Destry Allyn Spielberg, born in 1996, is an actress and a director. In front of the camera, she appeared in Licorice Pizza, I Know This Much Is True and Mass Hysteria. Behind it, she spearheaded Please Don't Feed the Children as well as shorts Let Me Go the Right Way and Rosie.
In February 2026, Destry announced her engagement to Jake Herskowitz.
