(Bloomberg) — McDonald’s Corp. named Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley to its board of directors, bringing one of the auto industry’s most outspoken executives to the burger chain that typically tries to stay out of the fray on hot-button issues.

Farley, who has led the automaker since October 2020, warned a year ago that tariffs implemented by the Trump administration would be “devastating” for workers in the auto industry. More recently, he thanked President Donald Trump for extending relief from some of those duties to US carmakers.

The CEO has also underscored the importance of the free trade agreement spanning US, Mexico and Canada, a pact that Trump has expressed indifference toward maintaining.

Farley has also praised the Republican-led campaign to relax stringent fuel economy regulations that had been pushing automakers to sell more electric vehicles. In December, Ford announced $19.5 billion in charges tied to a sweeping overhaul of its EV business that had long struggled to turn a profit.

In his free time, Farley likes to race cars at speeds of over 200 miles per hour and competed last year in the Mustang Challenge Invitational in Le Mans, France, and last month in Daytona, Florida.

Outside of Ford, Farley most recently served on the board of Harley-Davidson Inc. Earlier Tuesday, the motorcycle manufacturer said he would not stand for re-election. The Ford CEO has spent the vast majority of his career in the automotive industry, including nearly two decades at Ford and earlier roles at Toyota Motor Corp.
