McDonald’s launches ‘top-tier’ new McFlurry flavor to celebrate dessert’s 30th anniversary — but there’s a catch

McDonald’s is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the McFlurry with a brand new flavor.

The Birthday Cake McFlurry, made with creamy vanilla soft serve and blended with frosted cake-flavored confetti cookie dough pieces and birthday cake-flavored syrup, has landed in stores — but there’s a catch.

Given that the confection was originally created in Canada, the special edition flavor is not available in America.

“Yes… I know you’re shocked, but McDonald’s has given Canada yet another amazing McFlurry flavor as we sit with the two that we always get,” food blog Snackolator quipped on Instagram.

“Canada lately has gotten an Apple shake for Minecraft and Cadbury Egg McFlurry just in the last month… just throwing that out there,” they snarked.

Though it’s disappointing that McDonald’s locations in America won’t be getting “one of the best new flavors,” it’s no surprise given the origins of the McFlurry.

The beloved treat was first created by a Canadian McDonald’s franchisee named Ron McLellan in Bathurst, New Brunswick, in 1995.

According to a McDonald’s fan page, the original McFlurry flavors included Oreo, Nestle Crunch, M&M’s and Butterfinger, which has since expanded to over 20 flavors worldwide.

As of now, there are no talks of the Birthday Cake McFlurry moving onto U.S. menus anytime soon — but Delish noted that the fast-food franchise has a history of bringing Canadian menu items to America, so it’s not entirely out of the question.

Canadian McDonald’s fans can’t wait to get their hands on the newest addition to the menu.

“Wait this might actually change my life,” one comment read.

“This is a sweet way to celebrate,” another wrote.

“I had it. Definitely a top-tier flavor,” another lucky customer noted.
