Right-hander Max Scherzer of the Toronto Blue Jays is dealing with another injury, something the front office and everybody involved were not hoping for.
Unfortunately, Scherzer has dealt with injuries throughout the later stages of his career, which is why some were somewhat surprised when he decided to continue playing in Major League Baseball.
Scherzer signed a one-year deal with the Blue Jays during the offseason, with a lot of incentives attached.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported on what his contract looked like, showing that Scherzer is likely to lose out on a lot of money, given he has only 18.2 innings under his belt so far and his contract is filled with incentives.
“Details of Max Scherzer's one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays: $3 million base salary $1 million when he reaches 65 innings $1M for 75IP $1M for 85IP $1M for 95IP $1M for 105IP $1M for 115IP $1M for 125IP $1M for 135IP $1M for 145IP $1M for 155IP He can receive a total of $13M, same as Justin Verlander, although Verlander has $11M in deferrals. He can earn $13M total,” Nightengale wrote.
Scherzer isn't somebody who needs that much money at this stage of his career, though it's something he'd still like to earn.
However, the veteran right-hander and future Hall of Famer has made a ton throughout his career, with earnings surpassing $363 million just from playing the game.
