Max Scherzer is one of the best pitchers in MLB history, and now, he’s staying north of the border to finish what he started.
After helping the Blue Jays reach their first World Series since 1993 and pitching into the late innings of Game 7 last November, "Mad Max" has officially re-signed with the club on a one-year, $3 million deal. While his veteran leadership and postseason grit were major factors in the reunion, the three-time Cy Young winner admitted that his performance on the mound wasn't the only reason he’s back.
The true closer in the negotiations might have been his eight-year-old daughter, Brooke. On Thursday, just as the deal became official, Scherzer’s wife, Erica, shared a photo of a heartfelt, handwritten letter Brooke had penned to the Blue Jays front office back in December.
The letter, which detailed the family's love for "See And Tower" (the CN Tower) and Ripley's Aquarium, quickly went viral among Jays fans. While GM Ross Atkins was likely focused on Scherzer's 2025 impact, the pitcher made it clear that the family's connection to the city made the decision easy.
"My love for the game is strong because of their love for the game," Scherzer said. It appears Brooke got her wish, and the Scherzer family will have at least one more summer to visit the aquarium while "Mad Max" tries to finish the job he started last fall.
