The Dallas Mavericks are poised to endure one of the most intriguing 2026 offseasons in the NBA this summer.
With Masai Ujiri taking over as the Mavericks’ president and already taking the liberty of firing Jason Kidd, it’s reasonable to assume more changes are on the way in Dallas. Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz has a hunch that one of those changes could consist of Dallas swapping a former Duke phenom for a 26-year-old All-Star guard.
If the Mavs want a guard who's closer to Cooper Flagg's timeline, swapping out the 34-year-old Irving for the 26-year-old (Tyler) Herro (and 20-year-old Kasparas Jakučionis) would make sense,” Swartz wrote Friday.
“Dallas desperately needs help at guard and with their three-point attack. The Mavs ranked 29th overall in made threes per game (11.0) and were 26th in accuracy (34.4%). Herro is a lifetime 38.2% shooter from deep on 2.7 makes per game. Klay Thompson was the only Maverick to best Herro last season (2.9 per contest).”
“Jakučionis was Miami's 20th overall pick in the 2025 draft. A 6-foot-5 guard who can also shoot (42.3% from three as a rookie), Jakučionis gives the Mavs some much-needed young talent around Cooper Flagg.
In addition to receiving Herro and Jakucionis, the Mavericks would also receive a 2026 second-round pick (No. 41 overall) in Swartz's hypothetical trade idea.
Herro would be a near-perfect running mate for Flagg in Dallas. Like Flagg, Herro’s upside is extraordinarily high, and a key part of the rebuilding process is swapping older, less dependable assets for younger, more dependable long-term contributors.
Herro fits that description perfectly, as the 20.5 points-per-game scorer is firmly in his prime and has plenty of high-level basketball ahead of him.
Of course, it’ll come down to the Mavericks’ willingness to part ways with Irving this summer, which honestly shouldn’t be a hardship given the NBA champion’s advanced age and durability concerns.
