Mavericks predicted to part ways with Kyrie Irving, trade him for $209 million star duo to fully build around Cooper Flagg

1 hour ago 3

The Dallas Mavericks committed to building around Cooper Flagg when they traded Anthony Davis at the trade deadline, but they still haven’t moved their other veteran superstar: Kyrie Irving. With Dallas rebuilding and Irving wanting to contend, it makes sense for the two to part ways.

Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz proposes that the Mavs send Irving to a contender that could truly use his skillset, and make a deal with the Orlando Magic. In return, the Mavs would get a young guard to co-star alongside Flagg for the foreseeable future in Jalen Suggs.

The trade would look like this:

Mavs get: G Jalen Suggs, F/C Jonathan Isaac

Magic get: PG Kyrie Irving

“Both Irving and the Mavs will need to have a sit down discussion this summer, one that should end with them mutually agreeing to part ways. Irving is about to turn 34 and is coming off a torn ACL. He'll want to chase championships for the remainder of his career while Dallas has pivoted to a rebuild and should be searching for younger point guard options to grow alongside Cooper Flagg. Suggs may not be a true floor general, although the 24-year-old is averaging 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals for Orlando this season. He's signed to a good contract through the 2030 season and is one of the best on-ball defenders in the NBA. Irving is someone who can really charge up the Magic's sluggish offense with his ball-handling, playmaking and shooting ability. An All-Star last season, Irving put up 24.7 points, 4.6 assists and knocked down 40.1 percent of his threes,” Swartz wrote.

So far this season, Suggs is averaging 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.9 steals in 26.9 minutes per game. As for Isaac, he’s averaging 2.6 points, and 2.5 rebounds in 10 minutes per game, but he's still has the skills and talent to come off the bench.

The real prize in this deal is Suggs, who could become Flagg’s co-star for years to come. And, it moves Kyrie to a team that could use his starpower to become a true contender. It’s a win-win for both sides, and hopefully they consider it.
