The Dallas Mavericks are expected to seek out backcourt help this offseason and could turn to the Utah Jazz to strike a deal, according to Andy Larsen of the Locked On Jazz podcast.
Utah has been active in the rumor mill amid an ongoing rebuild. With the Jazz focused on developing their young core and building through the draft, some veteran players are likely to surface in trade talks this offseason.
Enter the Mavericks, who may search for a short-term replacement for Kyrie Irving. The nine-time All-Star is expected to miss significant time in 2025-26 due to a torn ACL in his left knee, opening the door for Collin Sexton as a potential trade candidate.
Sexton has never averaged fewer than 16 points per game in his seven-year career. Additionally, he posted a career-best 24.3 points per game with the Cavaliers during the 2020-21 season. The 26-year-old has just one season remaining on his contract, positioning him as a potential one-year rental for the Mavericks.
Following Larsen’s comments, Jimmy Crowther of All Things Mavs proposed a mock trade that would send Sexton to Dallas.
Here’s the proposed trade from Crowther:
Mavericks receive: Collin Sexton, 2025 No. 43 pick
Jazz receive: Daniel Gafford, Jaden Hardy
The Mavericks already possess depth in the frontcourt, and with Gafford slated to be an unrestricted free agent in the 2026-27 offseason, it would make sense for the Mavericks to flip him for guard help. While Hardy has shown flashes of potential, Sexton would be an immediate upgrade in the backcourt.
The 26-year-old averaged 18.4 points, 4.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds across 27.9 minutes per game in 63 appearances with the Jazz last season. He also shot a career-high 40.6 percent from three-point range.
