Marty Supreme ending explained: Marty’s journey from a selfish hustler to a responsible man
A still from the film's trailer (Image via YouTube/A24)The ending of Marty Supreme begins with Marty traveling to Tokyo for a rematch against his rival, the Japanese champion Endo. Earlier in the movie, Marty had lost to him and felt humiliated. Marty is playing in an exhibition match arranged by the businessman Milton Rockwell. Even though the match is just for show, Marty treats it like a real war.
The match is intense. At one point, Marty is told to lose on purpose to help Milton’s business deals, but Marty refuses to throw the game. He plays with everything he has and defeats Endo. This win is a huge moment for him because it proves he is truly the best, even if the match wasn't part of an official world tournament. For the first time, Marty feels like he has earned the respect he always craved.

Despite his fame and the money he just won, Marty realizes he needs to be there. He quickly finds a flight back to the United States. To get home faster, he even hitches a ride on a plane filled with returning soldiers, showing how desperate he is to reach New York.
When Marty arrives at the hospital, he goes straight to the nursery to see the baby. Marty Supreme ends with a long, close-up shot of Marty looking through the glass at the newborn child. At first, he is just staring, but then he begins to sob uncontrollably. While the movie does not clearly state if Marty is the biological father, it is obvious that he sees the child as his own.
The ending shows a change in Marty’s character. Throughout the film, he only cared about winning games and making money. Seeing the baby makes him realize that he has real-life responsibilities now. Marty Supreme is loosely based on the real life of Marty Reisman, a legendary American ping-pong champion and "hustler" known for his flashy style and incredible skills.
