Marlins trade of Edward Cabrera looking like the right move for .948 OPS reason

The Miami Marlins had a trio of starting pitchers that could've been on the move this offseason, with Eury Perez and Sandy Alcantara being the two to stick in Miami.

But, Edward Cabrera was dealt to the Chicago Cubs. While he's pitched well for Chicago so far, the outfielder the Marlins got in return for Cabrera has been a hit for the Marlins so far.

As MLB.com's Mark Feinsand notes, the Marlins trade of Cabrera looks like the right move thanks to the development of Owen Caissie, posting a .948 OPS through the beginning of the season.

Marlins made right move adding Owen Caissie for Edward Cabrera

"The centerpiece of the trade that sent Edward Cabrera to the Cubs, Caissie has lived up to his top-prospect label through the Marlins' first 10 games," Feinsand writes.

After his lackluster debut in 2025 with the Cubs, Caissie has turned things around in a big way during the 2026 season for Miami.

In 27 at-bats this season, he has a .948 OPS with two home runs, nine RBIs, and a .296 batting average. He also has one stolen base, two doubles, eight total hits, four runs, three walks, and some solid defense in the outfield.

While losing Cabrera stings, especially since he has a 0.00 ERA through two starts this season and 11.2 innings pitched, the prospect the Marlins got in return has been great for them.

The 23-year-old outfielder has looked great this season, and more importantly, he is going to be around in Miami for a long time thanks to six years of club control left.

This was the right move for the Marlins, as the addition of Caissie more than makes up for the loss of Cabrera, especially with Sandy Alcantara looking like a Cy Young contender once again.
