Marlins predicted to put $56 million Cy Young, two-time All-Star on trade block after starting another Cy Young campaign for 2026 season

The Miami Marlins have had an unprecedented hot start, mostly in thanks to their Cy Young ace, Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara is experiencing a comeback season, and for that reason, his time in Miami may be cut short.

FanSided’s Christopher Kline believes so as well, and predicts that Alcantara might be put on the trade block pretty soon due to his blazing start.

“Sandy Alcántara did not allow a run until the ninth inning of his third start this season. It was his second straight game pitching into the ninth. Alcántara was removed with a couple runners on and two outs left to get, but the Marlins' bullpen blew it and the former Cy Young winner was responsible for the subsequent runs and Cincinnati's comeback…This is a stunning return to form for Alcántara, who struggled to the tune of a 5.16 ERA last season after missing all of 2024 for elbow surgery. Still 30, still in his prime, Miami seems to have its ace back. But he's also on an expiring contract and it's hard to trust the Marlins to maintain their current competitive trajectory. Now might be the time to sell high, recoup meaningful assets, and position Eury Pérez as the rotational alpha moving forward,” Kline wrote.

So far this season, Alcantara has posted a 2-0 record, a 0.74 ERA, 18 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.575 in 24 innings pitched. If he can keep this up, he could be the unanimous Cy Young for the National League, and may even swipe it from Tarik Skubal if he was dealt to the American League.

As for his contract, he’s on his last year of his five-year, $56 million deal, although he does have a club option for next year. With that in mind, he could be a very attractive trade piece since he wouldn’t be a rental.

If the Marlins start to slow down and go back to their usual .500 or below selves, trading Alcantara seems more and more like a good idea. Especially if Alcantara continues his campaign for his second Cy Young.
