Marlins' forgettable $4 million decision includes Yankees, Cubs trade regrets

The Miami Marlins were hoping for a better start to the 2026 season.

They have won just 23 of their first 52 games, sitting 6.5 games back of the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.

But the Marlins made odd pitching decisions during the offseason, trading away two members of the starting rotation.

Instead of keeping those valuable arms, they added a declining right-hander for $4 million

"This one is actually a three-pronged regret, because Miami never would have bothered scooping up [Chris] Paddack for $4M in mid-February if it hadn't spent the first half of January trading away both Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers," Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote.

Paddack, who posted an ugly 7.63 ERA in seven starts with the Marlins before getting released. He signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds shortly thereafter.

"Meanwhile, both Cabrera and Weathers have made nine mostly respectable starts in their new homes with division leaders," Miller added. "And of the seven prospects Miami got for them, the only one to play in the majors thus far is Owen Caissie, with a negative-0.7 bWAR."

There's no denying that signing Paddack was a mistake. The Marlins admitted that when they sent him packing after just 30.2 innings.
