Mariners reportedly had trade interest in 20 home run Angels shortstop

The Seattle Mariners made two notable trades before Monday's deadline. 

Right-handed reliever Seranthony Domínguez was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the deal that sent starter Luis Castillo to the South Side. 

For the lineup, outfielder Taylor Ward, who has been an on-base machine in 2026, was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles. 

They weren't blockbuster trades; the Mariners attempted to improve the roster around the edges for their postseason push. 

However, Seattle's front office did entertain other ideas. 

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners reportedly had interest in a star shortstop from the AL West. 

Mariners were interested in Angels' Zach Neto

"The Seattle Mariners, knowing they can play Colt Emerson at third if J.P. Crawford departs as a free agent, were one of the teams to show interest in Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto, according to people briefed on their conversations," Rosenthal wrote. 

Neto has never been an All-Star but is having another solid year at the plate. He needs six more stolen bases to record his third consecutive 20-20 season. Neto produced over 5.0 bWAR in each of the past two seasons.

"The teams never exchanged names. The Mariners never even got a price," Rosenthal added, saying that the Mariners and Angels didn't advance far in trade discussions.

"Neto remained with the Angels, just as fellow shortstops CJ Abrams remained with the Washington Nationals and Otto Lopez with the Miami Marlins." 

The Mariners could refocus on Neto during the offseason. For now, he remains with the Angels, who will miss the postseason for a 12th consecutive year.
