The Seattle Mariners are on top of the American League West and are a real threat to make a deep run this season.
Of course, that sentence sounded better before the Mariners lost to the lowly Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, 1-0. The good news is they bounced back with a 6-5 win over the White Sox on Wednesday to take two out of three games.
And, history was made in a weird way.
On Tuesday, Mariners reliever Casey Legumina was named as the "starter" and went one inning, giving up one run (unearned) before the Mariners used Casey Lawrence for five innings.
Fast forward to Wednesday, and Legumina pitched again, getting the win with an inning and another unearned run. In turn, Legumina made history, per the Mariners PR account.
"Casey Legumina is the second @Mariners pitcher to start a game and be the winning pitcher the next day (May 20-21 at CWS). The only other instance in team history was Mark Langston, from June 9-10, 1984 at CLE (h/t @EliasSports)."
Legumina was an eighth-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, and he isn't a household name by any means. He pitched in 11 games for the Cincinnati Reds in 2023 with a 5.68 ERA in 12.2 innings, then he had an 8.68 ERA in just six appearances for the Reds in 2024.
Yet, Legumina now has his name in Mariners record books in a bizarre twist.
