Mariners' Cal Raleigh breaks Mickey Mantle's switch-hitting MLB record

5 hours ago 1

Cal Raleigh has homered in four consecutive games.

And each time he leaves the yard, it feels like he sets a new record of some sort. That's how historic this start to the season has been for the Seattle Mariners catcher.

Calling it the start of the season doesn't even seem that fair anymore. It's almost the halfway point, and Raleigh can't stop homering.

He's in the process of shattering a switch-hitting record held by Mickey Mantle, Jose Ramirez and Lance Berkman. They each had a season where they homered 29 times before the All-Star Break.

Raleigh, also a switch-hitter, has now homered 32 times after leaving the yard in the ninth inning on Monday. He's already three clear of the old record, and he's got almost three weeks until the All-Star Break.

The fact that he's doing this while also catching at a high level almost every game is even crazier.

Like, no one does this. The numbers back that up. And even anecdotally, it should be impossible for a catcher to be bashing like this.

If Raleigh keeps this up in the second half of the season, he'll make a case for having one of the best seasons ever by an American League position player.

And to be shattering a record held by Mantle? You know you're doing something very, very right.
