The Seattle Mariners haven't had the season they were hoping for, currently at 14-16. There are a few factors at play, but ultimately, this is simply the Mariners not doing enough offensively to be the team they hoped to be.
There have been times when the Mariners' offense looks to be one of the best in baseball, and others when they struggle in ways that some expected them to when entering the season.
Simply put, the Mariners can use some more pop, which is why a recent trade proposal from Sports Illustrated wouldn't be the worst idea.
Seattle receives: Dominic Smith
Atlanta receives: Dominic Canzone
“In the proposed deal, Atlanta and Seattle agree to a simple player-for-player swap, a deal that fills massive needs for both sides. Canzone is set to join a star-studded lineup, featuring the likes of Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuña Jr., offering a reliable lefty bat in the outfield. On the other side, Dominic Smith is moved to the Mariners, who have sought out a solid bat at either corner of the infield to support the likes of Julio Rodríguez and others,” Ethen Hutton of SI wrote.
While this trade isn't horrible, I also think it's fair to note that Canzone hasn't been a bad player by any means in Seattle.
He's hitting .279 this year with three home runs, striking out 13 times in 61 at-bats.
He hit .300 a year ago in 82 games, which included 243 at-bats. For Smith, I'd probably pass on this if I were Seattle.
