Marcus Rashford’s time at Aston Villa may have ended earlier than anyone expected.

The Manchester United forward, who joined Villa on loan in January, has picked up a hamstring injury that looks set to keep him out for the rest of the season, as per The Athletic.

For Villa fans, it feels like missing a sitter in front of an open goal — just when they needed him most.

Reports suggest Rashford will not need surgery but will still miss the final four league games. He already sat out Villa’s FA Cup sem-final loss to Crystal Palace and now faces a race against time to be ready for England’s summer fixtures.

Rashford made an impact during his short stay at Villa Park, scoring four goals and providing six assists in 17 appearances.

But just as he was finding his rhythm, injury has blown the final whistle on his season.

Villa currently sit seventh in the Premier League and are three points behind a Champions League spot.

Rashford was ineligible to face Manchester United anyway on the final day, so even a quick recovery would not see him return in a claret and blue shirt this term.

It’s a bit like being subbed off before the big penalty shootout — tough luck.

Asked about Rashford’s situation, United boss Ruben Amorim said, “All the players that are on loan, they will return and then the club will decide what to do at the end of the season. Yeah, of course (I am pleased about their form).”

What's next for Marcus Rashford?

Now, the big question: where does Rashford go from here?

He will continue his rehab at Villa, but his future remains up in the air. Villa have a £40 million option to make his move permanent. But there’s no clear signal yet whether they will trigger it.

Rashford is also focusing on getting fit for England’s World Cup qualifiers and friendlies in June. A strong summer could put him back in the shop window if United decide he is not part of their plans.

For now, Rashford’s loan spell closes with a hint of “what could have been” — a little like a shot that hits the post and bounces out.
