Marcus Freeman has established himself as one of the best collegiate coaches in the country in the past few years. Notre Dame hired Freeman as its defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in January 2021, and promoted him to head coach later that year. Last year, Freeman led the Fighting Irish to the national title game, but his team lost to Ohio State at the final hurdle. Although Freeman couldn't lead Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff this season, he has been linked with a move to the NFL, with the New York Giants still searching for a new coach.

On Friday, NFL insider Ian O’Connor appeared on the "Giants Nation" show and said that Freeman could secure the Giants' coaching job if he wants to.

“He (Freeman) was talking to (Notre Dame) about giving him a new contract," O'Connor said. "It seems like they’re going to have to do that every year because Freeman is going to be an attractive candidate every year. You see the way he runs his program, his public, the way he carries himself in public. He is, you could see that CEO type, which a lot of owners want now, and he’s never coached in the NFL, so that’s a question mark.

“But the coach at a high-profile program like that and to have the success he’s had is impressive. So I think if he’s willing to leave Notre Dame, I think he’d get the (New York Giants) job, frankly ... If he wants to leave, if he wants to coach in the NFL, I do think he’ll be the next coach of the Giants.”

The Giants fired Brian Daboll from his coaching role with the team on Nov. 10, following a 2-8 start this season. Since then, Mike Kafka has taken over as New York's interim head coach.

The Giants have lost four straight games after firing Daboll. However, the franchise has a team with plenty of talent, including quarterback Jaxson Dart, running back Cam Skattebo, and others, which could attract Freeman.

Marcus Freeman signed a reported four-year contract extension with Notre Dame in December 2024. He is currently tied to the team through the 2030 season and earns a reported $9.5 million per year.

Freeman has posted a 43-12 record in just over four years at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish finished with a 10-2 record this year, but opted out of a bowl game.

According to reports, Notre Dame plans to offer Marcus Freeman a new deal soon to avoid him leaving the program amid interest from the NFL.
