Maple Leafs have different trade plans for William Nylander, Matthew Knies than Auston Matthews

The Toronto Maple Leafs could be making some trades this offseason.

And whether or not Auston Matthews is a part of them, there will be a lot more names that could also pop into rumors, even the big names like William Nylander and Matthew Knies.

The speculation will only grow after Tuesday's episode of The Chris Johnston Show, where the NHL insider shares his latest insights.

Johnston said that the Leafs are willing to discuss trades of any player on their roster except Matthews.

Whether or not that's the right approach with Matthews likely depends mostly on how Matthews feels about staying in Toronto.

It does open the door to a lot of other possibilities, though.

The young winger Knies was a popular trade target before the deadline and didn't move. Maybe now is the team the Leafs trade him for a big haul.

Nylander seems like a logical building block alongside Matthews, but it also makes sense for the Maple Leafs to not close their ears off entirely to seeing what he could potentially earn in a trade.

Toronto has been a candidate all along to consider trading out of the group of defensemen on its roster, potentially led by rumored Morgan Rielly and Brandon Carlo.

And in the goalie ranks, the Leafs likely have too many bodies. A deal is very possible in some form in goal.

Of course, many of these players will stay put. There are only so many deals to be made.

But it appears Toronto's new front office is open for business, and it could make for quite the active offseason.
