Maple Leafs given 3 defensemen to target in free agency or trade

1 hour ago 2

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have a two-pronged task for their defensemen ranks in the offseason.

The first part would be potentially getting rid of Morgan Rielly. But whether or not that happens, they could use some reinforcements, whether that's in a trade or free agency.

Sportsnet's Justin Bourne and Nick Kypreos came up with three potential targets.

One would take a trade to acquire him: Adam Fox.

Fox is with the New York Rangers and is a great offensive player on the power play and in general at the point.

NHL Trade Talk's Jackson Weber added on to this take:

"Fox would be a very intriguing option. He’s been one of the best offensive defensemen since stepping into the league, and if the Rangers’ retool shifts toward a rebuild, the Maple Leafs should absolutely be calling GM Chris Drury to see what it would take to pry the 2020-21 Norris Trophy winner out of New York."

The other two potential targets are slated for free agency: Darren Raddysh and John Carlson.

Raddysh is in the midst of by far the best season of his career. He has 58 points through 58 games -- 17 goals and 41 assists.

The Maple Leafs would simply have to outbid the Tampa Bay Lightning to swipe Raddysh away.

Carlson is the long-time Capitals blue-liner who was traded to the Anaheim Ducks at the deadline.

If Carlson chooses not to return to Washington, he could be a great veteran pickup for Toronto.

It's certainly a market worth keeping an eye on for Maple Leafs fans as the offseason approaches.
