We have constantly told the Cat Distribution System we are done,, we have cats, we don't need anymore, so we have been diligent in rehoming any babies that come our way... Then the CDS does things like this ~gestures wildly in frustration~

  • 06

Yesterday (Oct-19) my husband was on the way home from town when he happened to see a pack of dogs in the main road near our home. They had a kitten, which at first my husband's initial though was not alive. The dog that had the kitten it is mouth, dropped the baby right in the middle of the road. Two cars in front of my husband drove over (straddled) this baby under their tires. The cars startled the poor thing & she moved enough for him to see, so he immediately pulled over when he realized sh

  • 07

He scooped her up right from the road. The dogs, not being mean or violent & wearing collars, were just happy & wagging their tails. Very much "You have our toy! Wanna play?" In behavior. To which he told them "No, you can't have this!" then quickly got the baby to the car.... Where she promptly pooped on him in thanks, lol

  • 08

He came right home & presented his battered & rescued tiny surprise to me. Both of them clearly upset.

  • 09

My instinct was a rapifire of thoughts of "What happened? How many babies are there? Is it okay? Do we need emergency vet services? Can we even AFFORD ER pet services?" Etc, Etc, Etc... I only managed to blurt out one of these thoughts "What happened?!" while quickly jumping to "Mother- Mode".

  • 10

He explained everything while I started playing Mama; gently checked for wounds, breaks, assessing for shock, etc. I carefully washed baby with a warm cloth as gently as possible. Once he knew I had things handled with the baby, he left to check the area for siblings & Mama. No sign of any others. We have no idea where the dogs stole the baby from or how far they carried her. My hope is that, due to the dogs not acting violent, they merely "held" her & not crushed her in their jaws. Maybe her in

We keep kitty supplies, powdered kitten formula & bottles, kitty & kitten safe meds & shampoo; so we are at least covered on home basics. I even setup a carrier with a heated blanket on low for her to rest comfortably (no siblings or mama to keep her warm).

  • 12

After tending to her, checking her over, & getting her somewhat clean she suckled about 20-25ml (roughly 1.5 tablespoons) of warm kitty milk.

  • 13

She is tiny, by size alone we thought she was 4-6 weeks old, but she no longer has baby blue eyes, which put her closer to 7+ weeks old. This combo has us guessing she is malnourished.

  • 14

No signs of fleas, no signs of mites (even checked in her ears), worms is TBD but I have not yet seen any sign & no obvious butthole "seeds" or nasty things (yuck, lol).

  • 15

At first, she didn't seem to be moving correctly, her panic had her flailing & her little limbs were not doing what they should. We immediately worried about concussion, broken bones, spinal injury, nerve damage, torn ligaments, bruised organs, etc. No signs of bleeding, her gums are still pink not grey (grey gums can be a sign of internal bleeding), no blood in her pee, but she has not yet pooped since the car ride.

  • 16

Maybe she will consider pooping once my Husband gets home from work today, just gotta have him hold her a bit & see if this is just her preference, lol!

  • 17

She handled meal times (every 3-4 hours) like a champ. So I am exhausted from a stressful night, but starting to feel very hopeful.

  • 18

This morning (Oct-20), she has shown significant improvement (Not even 24 hours yet)! She's calmer, talking to us or meowing when she hears one of our kitties meow (I suspect she's missing her siblings & Mama), mildly hissing when surprised, mostly walking better, wanting to explore our bedroom (though due to her event I have been restricting her movements to prevent worsening any possible injuries). Just all around worlds better. I'm hoping this is a good sign.

  • 19

Our current worry is her front left paw/leg, her chin/jaw, & any hidden damages. She has proven she can put weight on her leg, but moving causes it to fold at her "wrist" under her. I am hoping this is just a sprain, but resources online says it could be a break in the bone or joint, a torn ligament, or severe sprain.

  • 20

We have a stiff wrap on her paw/leg which seems to help her movements a ton, without it 'folding' under her weigh at the joint she seems so much more comfortable, but this is a temporary stop- gap as each different possible injury has different treatment needs. As animals are also really good at hiding pain, so we are still worried about hidden damage. Only Xrays can tell us how badly she is hurt. We are aiming to have a checkup h xrays as soon as possible.

  • 21

Her chin had slight swelling on one side yesterday, today her whole chin is swollen. She does still eat well, though I am extremely careful & gentle.

  • 22

So, she is definitely banged up & we have reached out to a local emergency assistance vet services program. Hopefully we will hear back soon as urgent care for pets, especially when you need X-rays, is costly even at the best priced Vet I could find. (If I don't hear back today, I will schedule the urgent visit anyways, soonest they have is tomorrow. I will know where she is going by this evening as we cannot put it off, any breaks could heal improperly if left untreated for too long.

  • 23

She loves a warm cloth "Mama-bath", which she gets often, especially after milk time. Her little purrs are super sweet. So she is definitely feeling better than yesterday.

  • 24

We have fostered & tended to many animals many times in our lives & are not put off or afraid to handle this situation, but I have never had one sooo little with a possible broken leg. I have read general resource information online but I would greatly appreciate any advice from anyone who has had to tend to & rehab one so small with injuries like these.

  • 25

We purposely avoid our local shelter, they have told me in person that situations that require more care than normal or recovery time are typically "put down", mostly because they just don't have the resources or manpower to keep up with it all. Regardless, I'm not going to even entertain that possibility unless there is no option for her. The next nearest no-kill shelter won't take animals unless you live in the area & they require ID to see you. So we're going to give her every damn chance we

  • 26

If you have suggestions, any little tricks to help with recovery, ideas for comfort please let us know. Any advice is appreciated. TIA

  • We appreciate him so much for not getting mad at the dogs in any way. Some of them might be out to hurt little kittens, but not all, and these ones were clearly friendly and simply unaware of their strength in comparison to her. He did the right thing by saving her, of course, but he also did the right thing by approaching them gently.

I figured after the previous post became so much more than I expected, everyone invested deserves an update. We finally got the baby "Tortico" (we will need to figure out a name that suits her) lol, to a Veterinarian & got her the Xrays she needed.

  • 34

The appointment went well. The staff & Dr was wonderful & very friendly. Dr reaffirmed that we did everything we could so far & held the same worries & concerns I had. So it is relieving to know we handled this situation well. Luckily, X-rays show no breaks or obvious tears.

  • 35

Unfortunately, Dr believes it is nerve damage causing her paw to buckle under activity. However, due to the signs of improvement over the last couple days, Dr is hopeful it will heal. Sadly, there is a chance it is permanent.

  • 36

Dr gave baby a "cold lazer" (nerve healing stimulation) treatment & some anti-inflammatory pain medication to help her heal. Dr also stated the wrapping for her leg is perfect & to continue this. Hopefully this is all she О will need.

  • We hope that her injury will not be permanent, of course, but either way, we are sure that she is going to live a happy and full life in this house. She is surrounded by love, and that is all that matters.

  • 37

We have a "recheck" visit for next week, which will give her more time to heal to see if she is going to improve or if this is permanent. Soon as we got home she finished off a bowl of warm formula & sat in my lap slap/swiping at my phone screen as | scrolled & typed, lol

  • 38

She is wanting to play & now that we know for certain how to properly care for her it will be easier to let her do so without worrying about breaks/tears. She already has shown she loves jingle- bell balls, her toy fishy, & her mouse. She also has a friend (Vin) who is just iching to be her buddy.

  • 39

She loves lap-time & settles nicely just purring up a storm while being the tiniest little loaf. It is obnoxiously perfect ②

  • 40

While she isn't fully healed, we feel much better having a clear answer & a plan to help her continue healing. It has only been a few days, but she has gone from a ragamuffin mess to this charming heart stopper without regrets. The Cat Distribution System wins another round!
