Mamdani’s deadly homeless policy: Letters to the Editor — Jan. 31, 2026

Two unhoused women sit amongst their belongings in the snow, one in a chair and the other on the ground, discussing the challenges of their situation during extreme cold. Ten people have died due to extreme cold and snow in the city. Helayne Seidman for the NY Post

The Issue: Cold weather killing 10 New Yorkers after Mayor Mamdani ended encampment sweeps.

This is the first of what will be many such incidents with Mayor Mamdani (“Suffering on City Hall’s doorstep,” Jan. 30).

He has no executive experience. He’s never been on the field, as the recent deaths of homeless individuals show.

His aversion to law enforcement will certainly lead to more of these deaths, despite the presence of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who I believe is a Godsend.

So, Mamdani will allow the homeless of New York City to freeze to death rather than force them indoors for their safety. Isn’t he the one who talked about the warmth of collectivism? Isn’t he the one who accuses the rich of being heartless?

His hypocrisy would be comical if it wasn’t so deadly.

Ice kills in two cities: In Minneapolis, President Trump’s poorly trained ICE kills. In New York, Mamdani’s ideological ice kills.

Getting the homeless off the streets in freezing blizzard weather should have been a common-sense decision by Mamdani.

There are vacant islands around the city where homeless facilities should be constructed instead of building a new 200-bed shelter at 61st Street and First Avenue, which isn’t right for the area.

So far, so bad, Mamdani. New Yorkers are expecting the worst from you; surprise us.

Mamdani is being a good socialist by letting the people do what they want, even if it kills them. That’s one way to lessen the burden of homelessness in his mind.

I guess Mamdani meant it when he said people who are homeless will not be forced off the streets.

He didn’t do nearly enough to get the homeless out of frigid conditions and into shelters. His policy to not force shelter upon the homeless is cold, inhumane and outright uncaring. Sometimes, many folks no longer have the capacity to implement their newfound right.

As a society, we must choose to help others and not worry about how it looks politically.

Mamdani has come up with a solution to homelessness: He’s going to freeze them to death. It’s sort of like him giving needles and a place to overdose to the junkies.

So, Comrade Mamdani didn’t remove the homeless from the streets and 10 people froze to death. I guess he figured they didn’t vote anyway.

The Issue: Longtime Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s exclusion from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Bill Belichick deserved to be a first-round pick for the Pro Football Hall of Fame (“Belichick denied being HC in the HOF,” Jan. 28).

I hope he wasn’t slighted because of his personal life being splattered all over the news.

Belichick is the best coach ever. Shame on the judges who didn’t vote for him.

Shame on the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters who snubbed Bill Belichick. I guess being a part of eight Super Bowl championships doesn’t matter.

I am not a Bill Belichick fan, but his omission is scandalous.

The solution is to make all the ballots public so we can see the electors who left him off their ballots. Let them explain their reason for omitting him.
