The Magic will have a new man trawling their sidelines in 2026. He won't be able to start planning for his future until after the postseason is over, however.
Orlando is planning on hiring Spurs associate head coach Sean Sweeney as its next coach, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Sweeney, 41, has spent more than a decade circumnavigating the NBA's coaching carousel, serving as an assistant for some of the league's most prominent sides.
He'll hope to help steer the Magic to success in the years to come, taking the reins of a promising roster spearheaded by Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.
Here's what you need to know about Sweeney's impending appointment to the top of Orlando's coaching staff.

Who is Sean Sweeney?
A former point guard at St. Thomas (Minnesota), Sweeney has served as an associate head coach on the Spurs since Mitch Johnson was appointed as permanent head coach ahead of the 2025-26 season. He has plied his trade on coaching staffs across the league's landscape, initially getting his start with the Nets as a video assistant in 2011.
In 2013, he was promoted to assistant coach under Jason Kidd. He followed Kidd to Milwaukee, serving in the same position with the Bucks. After Kidd's dismissal in 2018, Sweeney bounced around to the Pistons, where he served as an assistant under Dwane Casey. He reunited with Kidd in Dallas three years later, helping lead the Mavericks to the 2022 NBA Finals.
