Lynnville-Sully erased an early deficit to defeat Ankeny Christian and secure a return to trip to the Class 1A Iowa high school state baseball tournament.

The Hawks, who are now 24-2 overall, are the defending champions. They are joined by 2A reigning titleholder Underwood, who also punched a ticket to Carroll next week.

Iowa is the only state that plays sanctioned summer baseball in the United States. The state tournament is split between two sites this year, as 1A and 2A compete in Carroll from Merchants Park while 3A and 4A are in Sioux City. Those substate finals are scheduled for Wednesday night.

Lynnville-Sully received a strong pitching performance from Carson Maston, as he struck out 11 and allowed just five hits with two earned runs over five innings. Trace Carlson came on to finish the job, recording a pair of perfect innings.

Lannon Montgomery, a key returning player from last year's title run, was 2-for-2 with two RBI while fellow senior Terran Gosselink also had two hits with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

Up first for Lynnville-Sully in the state quarterfinals will be East Buchanan. Other matchups see Remsen St. Mary's play Hillcrest Academy, Martensdale-St. Marys take on Kee and Saint Ansgar face Logan-Magnolia.

In 2A, Underwood opens defense of its title against Cascade while Unity Christian faces Mediapolis. On the bottom side of the bracket, Pleasantville takes on West Lyon and Van Meter plays Chariton.
