Three things are certain in life: death, taxes and the incredible longevity of Cristiano Ronaldo’s career.
The only major trophy missing from Ronaldo’s glittering cabinet is the FIFA World Cup and he will look to set the record straight when he leads Portugal at next year’s edition of the tournament.
Portugal legend Luis Figo who has not only backed Ronaldo to start for the nation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but also to continue finding the back of the net despite his advancing age.
If Portugal manages to qualify for next year’s edition of the tournament, Figo expects Ronaldo to continue delivering the goods for his country. The now 40-year-old Ronaldo continues to defy age as he continues to find the back of the net with incredible consistency, as he has once again surpassed the 30-goal mark this season.
“He could be a starter [at the World Cup]. Decisive. we have to wait and see. But Cristiano is an example for the whole world in terms of availability, professionalism, talent," said Figo.
Ronaldo has established himself as one of the most prolific goal-scorers in football history, and Figo pointed out his innate ability to score goals.
“And he will always score goals, I think even at 40, even at 42, he will always score goals. Now, whether they are decisive goals, I don’t know, we have to wait and see. For us Portuguese, let’s hope they are always decisive," Figo added.

If Portugal qualify for the 2026 World Cup and Ronaldo is selected, he will make history as the first player to feature in six World Cups.
With Ronaldo himself stating his ambition to reach 1,000 career goals before considering retirement and a contract extension at Al-Nassr expected to keep him at the club until at least the summer of 2026, there is a strong belief that the legendary forward will continue to break records in the twilight years of his remarkable career.
