ATLANTA – Head Coach Brian Kelly highlighted the fans of LSU multiple times in his remarks at SEC Media Day earlier today, but he also talked about the state community as a whole.
In the first couple of minutes of his time, Coach Kelly brought up how much he loved the fans in Baton Rouge.
One of Kelly’s favorite bits of this week is getting to generate excitement for an already excited fanbase, saying, “I think what stands out to me is that when I get this opportunity to talk to everybody, it's really about generating the continuous excitement from our fan base for LSU football. We have an incredibly passionate fan base.”
The Tigers led the country in season ticket sales this season with 75,000.
Not only is it important for Kelly to build that community for the Tiger fans, but he also wants to branch it out to the rest of the state.
LSU will play both Louisiana Tech and South East Louisiana for two of its four non-conference games.
When asked about this, Kelly said, “You don't play 12 SEC schools, so now you're open with two opportunities. In the state of Louisiana we have such a passionate base. Why not play the schools from our own state and share in the revenue?”
As the old saying goes, “take care of your own” and Kelly applies that where possible mentioning, “If we're going to have to pay somebody to come in and play us, why not play the in-state schools and take care of them.”
The Tigers will play Louisiana Tech Week 2 on Sept. 6 and Southeastern Louisiana Week 4 on Sept. 20.
