Second seed Leylah Fernandez will face Sorana Cirstea in the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open 2025.

Fernandez beat Wang Xiyu 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round, where Eva Lys awaited her. The Canadian was cruising along smoothly in the first set, building a comfortable 4-1 lead. However, Lys fought back with a three-game run to even things up.

Fernandez put herself in the front with a service hold, putting the pressure on Lys, who had to serve to stay in the set at 5-4. The former broke the latter's serve at this point to take the set. Fernandez raced to the finish line after that, handing out a breadstick in the second set for a 6-4, 6-1 win.

Cirstea scored a 7-5, 6-3 win over Dalma Galfi to set up a second-round date with Ajla Tomljanovic. The Aussie claimed the opening set for herself after sweeping the last three games of the set. The second set devolved into chaos around the halfway mark, with neither player being able to hold serve.

A fifth consecutive break of serve ultimately sealed the set in Cirstea's favor. She also took control of the third set, going 5-1 up within a few minutes. However, she failed to close out the match on her first try despite a couple of match points. She stepped up to serve for the contest a second time, and got the job done on her fifth match point for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win.

Fernandez's win over Lys was her 30th of the season. She has advanced to her fifth quarterfinal of the season. She also improved her record at the Hong Kong Open to 10-1. She was a semifinalist last year, and won the title in 2023. Cirstea fought past Tomljanovic to book her spot in the quarterfinals. She has made the last eight of a tournament for the sixth time this year.

Fernandez and Cirstea recently crossed paths for the first time at the Japan Women's Open in Osaka a couple of weeks ago. The young Canadian came out on top in three sets, and went on to win the title as well.

This could be another close showdown between them. However, Fernandez's record in Hong Kong makes her the firm favorite to win this showdown. She weathered Cirstea's shotmaking during their previous encounter, and has the game to do so yet again.
