'Let's pump the brakes': Mike Trout's Opening Day performance deemed unsustainable

1 hour ago 2

Mike Trout's seventh-inning home run against the Houston Astros in yesterday's Opening Day game propelled the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-0 victory.

Trout finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate with three walks and a strikeout. The future Hall of Famer set an Angels record by making his 14th Opening Day start with the organization.

The previous record was held by Garrett Anderson with 13, according to Baseball America's Taylor Blake Ward

Trout's performance stood out for two reasons: Angels and baseball fans would love to see him have a season similar to his MVP years, and injuries have been a recurring issue for the 34-year-old.

FanSided's Austin Owens is not convinced Trout's standout day will become a regular occurrence for him in 2026.

Trout's Opening Day performance: 'Let's pump the brakes'

"As refreshing as it is to see Trout making a major impact on a game, let's pump the brakes on the 'he's back!" talk. It has been six years since Trout has played 85+ games in a season," wrote Owens.

"Even if he can be on the field for 100+ this year, it's not likely that he can sustain anything close to the pace of his stratospheric 2012-2019 run. Let's enjoy Trout's success when we get it, but let's also not expect him to be in the MVP race again."

Moving forward, the Angels will take all the offensive production they can muster from Trout. He is under contract through the 2030 season, having signed a 12-year, $426.5 million extension in 2019.
