LeBron James rumor is intriguing news for Cavaliers and Warriors

LeBron James is slated to hit free agency this summer, and it sounds like a return to the Los Angeles Lakers is looking unlikely.

According to San Amick of The Athletic, it's pretty well known around the league that James will depart Los Angeles this offseason, and the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are top landing spots for the future Hall of Famer.

"As recently as late January, not long after an ESPN report detailed so much of the dysfunction in James’ relationship with the Lakers organization, the widely-held consensus around the league was that there’s no way he’d be back in a Lakers jersey," Amick said. "

"The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors were, and are, often mentioned by league executives as his most likely destinations. But it was the lack of synergy and consistent success with James on the court, above all else, that drove this idea of an unavoidable exit."

James is still a highly effective player at 41 years old, averaging 21.8 points per game and nearly seven assists on 51% from the field.

However, his fit with Luka Doncic in Los Angeles hasn't been as smooth as they thought, and with James' relationship with Lakers ownership deteriorating over the years, a fresh start for all parties seems logical.

As for where James could play next, Cleveland and Golden State could be possible destinations.

A reunion between James and the Cavs would be electric. The 22-time All-Star could also be the missing piece that elevates Cleveland into an NBA Finals favorite, though it remains to be seen if James can play alongside Donovan Mitchell, another ball-dominant superstar.

Golden State has long been linked to James, as the franchise must make one final push to compete for a championship with Stephen Curry. Signing James would bring the Warriors one step closer to title contention, but there are still a bunch of problems plaguing Steve Kerr's squad.

It remains to be seen whether Cleveland or Golden State has the money to sign James this offseason, but there's no denying both would be fascinating spots for the arguable greatest player of all time to finish his illustrious career.
