LeBron James reveals new retirement plans as free agency decision looms

1 hour ago 3

As the basketball world waits for LeBron James to make his free agency decision, every little bit of information becomes something to be deeply analyzed.

Things felt at least a bit different Thursday, because James himself was actually talking. He was at the Fanatics FanFest event and got a chance to share some of his own thoughts about his future.

One of them was particularly surprising.

Most of the pundits have been acting like James will play one more season and then retire. That makes his offseason decision between teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers a choice that would impact just the 2026-27 campaign.

Except, well, James doesn't necessarily see it like that.

As part of one answer during the event, James referred to the idea of spending the "last few years" or "last two years" of his career somewhere:

Lebron: "Where I want to spend the last few years...or the last 2 years of my NBA career"

That's a game changer on a number of levels.

It means the whole NBA ecosystem could continue to benefit from LeBron's presence longer than maybe planned.

It also means that a team getting the King this offseason might have a couple seasons to benefit from everything he brings to an organization.

Beyond that, it raises the question of just how good LeBron can be at 42 and even 43 years old.

At this point, no one is really doubting his greatness, though. He may stick around for a while to keep proving it.
