In many ways, it would be fitting for LeBron James to return home once more.
The Akron, Ohio native was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, then returned to the Cavs to claim a legendary NBA title. And now, the basketball world wonders if LeBron has one more homecoming left in him.
It’d be a relatively simple move to pull off — if James is willing to take a substantial pay cut in Cleveland. The easy part is opting out of his player option with the Lakers. The harder part is lining up a salary for him amid second-apron issues for the Cavs.
But let’s assume the money makes sense. Does the move as a whole work?
Fox Sports commentator Nick Wright suggested earlier this week that it’s actually the best move from a basketball standpoint, too.
“Just go home, Bron,” Wright said. “As great as Luka (Doncic) is, I actually think Bron has a better chance of winning a championship playing with the Cavs.”

Cleveland certainly has a more well-rounded starting lineup than the current Lakers.
LeBron joining a starting group with Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and one of Jarrett Allen or Max Strus? That sounds potent, even with James turning 41 midway through the 2025-26 season.
The Lakers have to solve their center problem (maybe they should make an offer to the Cavs for Allen).
Really, though, the money is probably the biggest complication here. James could make more than $100 million over the next two seasons in L.A., or in a lot of other places. He couldn’t make much at all with the Cavs.
How much is one final trip home worth? Cleveland is hoping it’s priceless.
