The Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers would love to add Milwaukee Bucks phenom Giannis Antetokounmpo to the fold before Thursday.
For the Warriors, crafting a package around Jimmy Butler (who's nursing an ACL injury) or Draymond Green would help improve the franchise’s odds of completing an NBA-altering/season-saving deal. In the Lakers’ case, pairing Luka Doncic with Antetokounmpo by sacrificing Austin Reaves would be a trade worth considering for Milwaukee.
On Sunday, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel delivered trade news regarding Antetokounmpo that is good news for the Warriors and bad news for the Lakers.
“Warriors are very much in the mix,” Siegel wrote on X/Twitter Monday. “As I've reported since last week, if a Giannis trade happens now, it will be with Golden State. “We will have new details in the morning on everything, don't worry. If anything happens, it won't be until Wednesday night at the earliest.”
Based on Siegel’s report, it appears the Warriors are better positioned to land Antetokounmpo this week than the Lakers. Of course, things could change drastically between now and Feb.5, but an Antetokounmpo-Lakers blockbuster trade isn’t as realistic as it was a few weeks ago.
The best-case scenario for the Lakers would be the Bucks keeping Antetokounmpo on their roster for the rest of the year and shopping him around during the summer.
In that case, the Lakers would be in good shape to lure the two-time MVP to Los Angeles and improve the 2026-27 season outlook. As it stands now, the Warriors will have a golden opportunity to wow the Bucks with an alluring trade package for Antetokounmpo and secure his services before the trade deadline passes.
All eyes will be on the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes moving forward.
