Los Angeles Lakers' top free agent target, Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler, could be in the driver's seat to land him after this latest update by NBA insider Sam Amick.

According to Amick, Walker is at odds with the Jazz as he is set to enter free agency.

"Meanwhile, sources tell @TheAthletic that a player who does want to be there - big man Walker Kessler - is at odds with the front office over his lack of an extension offer last summer and the current handling of his restricted free agency."

Difficult day for the Jazz on the optics front: Here you have Darryn Peterson refusing to work out for the team with the No. 2 pick, one year after Ace Bailey did the same (when they had No. 5).

Kessler has been linked to the Lakers for some time. While he's a restricted free agent this summer, this is the Lakers' real chance at possibly acquiring him.

The Jazz reportedly had a high asking price for Kessler in the past and are projected to attempt to maximize their cap space to retain him.

Walker Kessler could address major need for Lakers

The 24-year-old is set to enter restricted free agency with his expiring $4.8 million salary for 2025-26. The Jazz and Kessler were unable to strike a new contract before the start of the last season, and it could spell trouble for them this offseason.

This could put the Lakers in a great position to sign him. He's been viewed as a great fit for Luka Doncic with his great combination of size and has great qualities for a big man with his efficiency, rebounding and defensive capabilities.

The Lakers lack a true big man who can be a great piece long-term alongside Doncic. Deandre Ayton proved not to be the answer, but Kessler has all the tools to be the guy.

Nonetheless, a lot would need to happen for L.A. to sign the former Auburn Tiger. Kessler was held to five games last season before he underwent left shoulder surgery to address a torn labrum.

In those five games, Kessler averaged 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks.

If the Lakers land Kessler, not only would it address their long-standing need at center, but also give them one of the league’s more promising young big men. He would immediately become a foundational piece alongside Doncic and other key pieces for years to come.
