The San Antonio Spurs are in a better position than most to start the offseason.
San Antonio, which led the New York Knicks for 72% of its winnable NBA Finals series, clearly has the pieces to make significant noise in the postseason.
Victor Wemnanyama is a top-5 center, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle are emerging as young stars right in front of our eyes, and Stephon Castle, Devon Vassell, Julian Champagnie, and Keldon Johnson make for one of the best supporting casts in the league.
Still, the Spurs could make a move or two to raise their ceiling. Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley tabbed the Denver Nuggets’ 30-year-old NBA champion trade candidate, who’s been linked to the Los Angeles and Golden State Warriors, as a potential target for the five-time NBA champions.
“The Nuggets would presumably prefer to keep Gordon, their uber-valuable Swiss Army knife, but the Spurs could dangle the kind of trade package that makes them reconsider that stance,” Buckley wrote Saturday.
“And one might argue they should, since a big, physical forward who can finish, shoot, create, and defend could be exactly what this roster needs to clear that final hurdle.”
“If there's any pause here, it's probably with Gordon's relative lack of three-point volume, which might be a worry with the spacing concerns tied to this guard group. No trade candidate is perfect, though, and Gordon would still be more of a need-filler than most.”
According to The Stein Line’s Marc Stein, Gordon is ‘drawing the strongest external interest’ on the offseason trade market, and for good reason. The former lottery pick is starting to find his touch from beyond the arc and has proven to be a lethal finisher around the rim in transition when the Nuggets commit to an uptempo style of play.
The 30-year-old is also a switchable defender whom opponents can’t pick on regularly.
Gordon averaged 16.2 points and 5.8 rebounds with the Nuggets this season, shooting 49.7% from the field and 38.9% from three-point land. The Spurs could use a multi-dimensional power forward to help strengthen their roster.
While he’s far from a cheap target, he would be a valuable addition to an evolving San Antonio squad.
