The Los Angeles Lakers have made so many moves this offseason that some roster construction will eventually be necessary, whether that means cutting a player or making a trade. Several names have been mentioned as potential trade or cut candidates, but nothing has come to fruition as of yet.
The Lakers have until the end of training camp to finalize their roster. Bronny James, Dalton Knecht and Jaden Hardy are among the players who could potentially be moved or waived if the team cannot find a trade.
“Clearly, the Lakers need to dump someone, and I think it's going to be one of three players," Lakers insider Jovan Buha said. "It's going to either be Dalton Knecht, Jaden Hardy, or Bronny James."
The Lakers have spent much of the summer trying to move Jarred Vanderbilt and Knecht in exchange for a starter or another significant piece.
“The Lakers are actively shopping Dalton Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt in trade talks. After gaining two second-round picks in the Deandre Ayton trade, Los Angeles could consolidate those assets in a deal immediately for a starting-caliber wing," NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
It turns out that another Lakers wing could also be on the trade block. Heavy.com's Sean Deveney believes the Lakers could move Jake LaRavia either to add a quality player or simply to get back under the roster limit.
“Hustles, plays every game, but inconsistent. His contract makes him an attractive piece, though, as the Lakers are still figuring out the back end of their roster,” Deveney wrote.
LaRavia was brought in last summer as an intriguing young player the Lakers hoped could develop into a useful rotation piece. However, things have not gone entirely as planned. Los Angeles used LaRavia in its rotation, but he rarely received enough consistent playing time to truly establish himself.
LaRavia has made $15 million early in his career, and his contract could make him an appealing option for teams looking for a relatively affordable piece. The Lakers are going to have to make a difficult decision regardless of which player they ultimately move. If LaRavia has the strongest trade value among the candidates who could be moved, then he could become the player LA uses to solve its roster crunch.
