Regarding in-season trades, the Los Angeles Lakers’ mid-February deal for former Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic will likely go down as one of the wildest transactions of all time.
The Lakers seemed opposed to trading Anthony Davis anytime soon, but they were clearly working behind the scenes to wash their hands of the injury-prone forward.
With Doncic thriving during his first full season with the Mavericks and Davis already landing on the trade block in Dallas, it’s safe to say the Lakers won the trade.
The Smoking Cuban’s Noah Weber believes there’s a possibility the Lakers could fleece the Mavericks in another blockbuster trade.
“Lakers could fleece the Mavericks in a trade again,” Weber wrote Wednesday. “He can effectively play nearly any position, as shown by him playing all five positions over the last season and a half as a Maverick, and his versatility should be what has the Lakers heavily considering trading for him.”
“His fit next to Cooper Flagg has also been excellent, just like it was with Doncic last season, and he'd definitely be a plug-and-play player in Los Angeles.”
“His energy and intensity are second to none, and these types of players are the ones that excel most when the lights are brightest. Just like they are in Tinseltown.”
Marshall may not be a needle-mover for some, but he’s shown he can be a useful downhill attacker who could serve as a spark plug for the Lakers moving forward.
It also helps that Marshall, who’s averaging a career-best 14.7 points per game with the Mavericks this season, has valuable experience playing alongside Doncic and shouldn’t run into any chemistry issues if a deal were to materialize this year.
The Xavier product is certainly an asset worth exploring a trade for.
