Lakers officially cut ties with history-making 22-year-old guard after one season

The Los Angeles Lakers have been forced to make some challenging roster decisions at the start of the offseason.

One of them is what to do with a history-making 22-year-old guard (on Nov 3, he became the youngest player in Lakers history to score 25 points without attempting a single free throw)

In the end, Los Angeles elected to move on from the Arkansas product on Wednesday.

“The Los Angeles Lakers have officially renounced the free agent rights to LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Dion Waiters, Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart, Maxi Kleber, Nick Smith Jr, Jared Dudley, Avery Bradley, Jaxson Hayes, Markieff Morris, and Wayne Ellington,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto said Wednesday.

While Smith appeared in only 30 games with the Lakers during his inaugural season, he certainly showed promise as a third-year contributor. The 22-year-old scored in double figures nine times and etched his name into the record books during his lone start in Los Angeles.

Smith, known for his three-level scoring and fluid athleticism, averaged 6.2 points per game while shooting 43.5% from the field and 39.5% from beyond the arc. The bad news for Smith is that he’ll be on his third team in four years, which is a lot of movement for a young player.

The good news is that Smith has the talent to eventually latch onto an organization and become a significant part of its future plans.
