New Orleans Pelicans star Trey Murphy has earned the right to be a highly regarded trade target this offseason.
After a quiet rookie season in New Orleans, Murphy put the NBA on notice with his two-way versatility during his sophomore campaign and has only elevated his game since. The Virginia product was in a losing situation with New Orleans this year, but impressed with 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 47.0% from the field and 37.9% from beyond the arc.
The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the franchises that have been linked to Murphy since the start of the year, and according to a report from NBA reporter Evan Sidery, the 17-time NBA champions now know the full asking price for the rising star.
“A handful of contending teams are in pursuit of Trey Murphy III as the Pelicans have let it be known they’re now open to fielding offers,” Sidery wrote on X/Twitter Monday.
“For New Orleans to even entertain moving Murphy, it would take a combination of first-round picks, prospects, plus an immediate contributor.”
Sidery recently stated that the Lakers are looking to end Jarred Vanderbilt and Dalton Knecht’s stints with Los Angeles this season, making his most recent report near-perfect.
Of course, the Lakers will have to attach future first-round selections (their 2026 No. 25 overall pick and 2031 first-round pick, for instance and an experienced veteran like Jake LaRavia to help them beat out their competition and close the deal this summer.
If Los Angeles is truly dedicated to pairing Luka Doncic with a wiry, well-rounded forward who would make life easier for him on both ends, it’ll make it happen.
