Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been involved in retirement for the past few years.
After all, the four-time NBA champion is the oldest active player in the league and doesn't have the best long-term outlook. However, James isn’t prepared to step away from the NBA just yet, and on Tuesday, he revealed the Bronny James-centered reason he’s still playing.
“To be able to have Bronny in the locker room has definitely helped out a lot," James said on the Mind the Game podcast Tuesday. "I have a job and a responsibility to show him what it means to be a professional and the results that come with it. I have a responsibility in that."
"Yes, he's seen it from the outside looking in throughout the course of his life, but now being in the locker room, being in film sessions, being on the plane, being in everything that surrounds how to be a professional."
Bronny could definitely use some assistance from his future Hall of Famer at this stage of his career. The former second-round pick has struggled to be an impactful offensive player for JJ Redick thus far, prompting Los Angeles to demote him to the G League several times this year.
The good news for Bronny is that he’s fortunate enough to receive mentorship from arguably the best player in NBA history, allowing him to learn tips and pointers that could help carve out a solid career for himself in the pros.
Even when the 21-year-old’s father retires, he’ll always be there to help him navigate life in the competitive, cutthroat NBA.
