The Los Angeles Lakers are trying to get hot at the right time and make a deep playoff run. The team has shown improvement on the defensive end recently, highlighting just how dangerous they can be. LeBron James has missed significant time this season, but the Lakers are still contending—just the way he wants.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
James has been sidelined for the last few games, and head coach JJ Redick provided an update on Tuesday night.
“He probably still needs a couple of more days,” Redick said. “He’s still day-to-day.”
This isn’t ideal for James, as it suggests he may miss additional time. His absence also puts more pressure on Luka Doncic, who risks being worn down as the playoffs approach.
“King James hasn’t played since March 5, and the Lakers are ruling him out with a hip contusion and left foot arthritis on the official injury report. Both injuries are problematic for a 41-year-old superstar with LeBron’s mileage. Fans should not expect to see him on Thursday night against the Chicago Bulls, and Redick’s comments likely mean he will miss multiple more games. The Lakers can win without him, but it takes a herculean effort from Luka Doncic. Fans know number 77 is one of the five best players in the world. The Don can answer that challenge, but LA needs him at his peak in the playoffs. They certainly can’t afford to wear him out down the stretch by forcing him to carry a massive workload,” Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts wrote.
At 41, James’ latest injury battle underscores why retirement may be a serious consideration this offseason. The Lakers will need him fully healthy for the playoffs, but there is a significant cost to his absence now.
Doncic will continue carrying the team and managing playoff seeding, with Austin Reaves providing strong support. Ultimately, the Lakers’ postseason hopes will hinge on how much LeBron can contribute before the playoffs begin.
