It was Bronny's fourth appearance in the regular season in his sophomore year. It was also his second straight impactful performance, as the first came in a win against the Miami Heat on Sunday, when he recorded two points, two assists, and three steals.
Against the Trail Blazers, the Lakers missed both Luka Doncic and LeBron James due to injuries, while Austin Reaves also sat out, giving the likes of Bronny to shine.
The win put the Lakers in the third spot in the Western Conference standings with a 6-2 record, after starting the season at 2-2.
Bronny's steady improvements come at a time when the Lakers need contributions from their bench players the most as they deal with numerous injuries on their roster.
In his rookie year, Bronny played in 27 games, averaging 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game.
JJ Redick praises Bronny James' defensive abilities
After giving Bronny James an opportunity in their game against the Heat, Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised the sophomore guard's defensive abilities, highlighting his impact on the team.
“I thought he was really good on the ball [defensively],” Redick, who is coaching the team for the second straight season, said. “He got a steal off the ball, but I thought he was really good off on the ball and now I’ve seen that twice over the last week or so where he was he was really just a force in terms of containment and physicality." "So just a really good building block for him tonight to play in a very meaningful game in the fourth quarter and have a lot of good plays," he said, following their win against the Heat. The Lakers will next face the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, Nov. 5, as they hope to continue their rise in the West.
