Lakers' Dalton Knecht makes surprising Summer League decision amid trade rumors

Los Angeles Lakers guard Dalton Knecht’s stint with the 17-time NBA champions has been a whirlwind, to put it mildly.

The Tennessee product looked like a future All-Star for most of his rookie season in Los Angeles, but regressed significantly in Year 2 in just about every major category. After a late-January trade request and a recent report indicating the Lakers are shopping Knecht around the league, it’s only a matter of time before the two parties go their separate ways.

For that reason, Knecht’s decision to attend the Lakers’ Friday night Summer League contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder was surprising.

Considering the former first-round pick’s future with the Lakers is bleak (and for good reason), there’s no logical reason for him to support the organization in every way, shape, or form.

Knecht doesn’t necessarily have to hold a grudge against Los Angeles. However, how common is it for a contributor on the verge of being shipped elsewhere to show up for a Summer League game with teammates he may not get to share the floor with in the foreseeable future?

Not as common as one might think, and even if Knecht, who averaged 4.2 points per game while shooting 45.5% from the field and 34.2% from beyond the arc last year, somehow remains with the Lakers a little while longer, it won’t make his Summer League decision any less head-scratching.
